16 imagesSay "Rwanda" to most people in the world and they automatically conjure up one or two images: the genocide or mountain gorillas. But just like any other country, Rwanda is more complex than its visual typecast: it's a safe country, also a poor one, and filled with working people and laughing people, mud homes and skyscrapers, fancy parties and simple get-togethers. These Instagram photographs aim to show a different side of a country I called home for two years.
60 imagesDown a dusty road in southern Rwanda, the pointed blue roof of a large church suddenly pierces the sky. This is the Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows in Kibeho, where the Catholic Church says the Virgin Mary appeared from 1981-1983. She gave messages of prayer and peace, but also foretold the 1994 genocide. It is the only Catholic Church-sanctioned site in Africa, and the Shrine's overseers hope it will become a top religious tourism site on par with Lourdes in France or Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico.
