People leave mass at the Shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows in Kibeho, Rwanda, on Sunday, October 26, 2014. This is the only sanctioned Marian sanctuary in Africa. The Virgin Mary appeared here in 1981to three young women, one of whom still lives near the church grounds.
The Rwanda Development Board, the government agency in charge of tourism, is pushing Kibeho as a tourist destination, and as such, plans to pave the dirt road in the next two years. The government is also encouraging private investors to build hotels and other tourism-related infrastructure.
